Eugene “Snooky” Young 1919 – 2011

Op 11 mei j.l. is op 92- jarige leeftijd de “leadtrumpeters leadtrumpeter” Snooky Young overleden. (bron: jazztimes.com)

 

Hij speelde tot z’n laatste ademteug.

Snooky Young heeft de overgang van de 2-beat feel naar de swing meegemaakt; hij werkte tegelijkertijd in de bands van Jimmy Lunceford en Count Basie.

“It was like night and day, those two bands,” he said. “In fact,I had to learn how to play again when I went to the Basie band. Lunceford’s was a two-beat band. Basie’s was the band that started to swing. The bass would be going, and Jo Jones would just kick his bass drum every now and then, and the guitar and bass would keep on walking. Well, I had to get used to that, since I was coming from a band where the rhythm played every beat.”

Hij werkte ook met Lionel Hampton’s bands en was mede-oprichter van de Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, het huidige Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Hij werd in 1967 lid van de Tonight Show Band en bleef 25 jaar, tot Jay Leno de show overnam van Johnny Carson.

Tot zijn overlijden was Snooky Young lid van het Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Ondanks zijn lange carrière heeft hij maar 3 platen onder z’n eigen naam uitgebracht: Boys From Dayton, Master Jazz in 1971; Snooky & Marshal’s Album, Concord Jazz in 1978; Horn of Plenty, Concord Jazz in 1979)

Zijn filosofie over z’n jarenlange vakmanschap was deze:

“Practice every day and pretty soon it’ll become fun; if you want to keep up with your times, you have to keep up with your instrument; when you play an arrangement, try to feel what the man wrote, because if you can’t feel it, you aren’t going to be able to play it.”
